Anarchy Online's premise revolves around the fight for control of Rubi-ka in the years following June 29475. According to the story, hyper-corporation Omni-Tek had been granted a one thousand year lease on the fictional planet prior to the first conflicts. It was a seemingly useless desert landscape until the discovery of the mineral notum. That mineral's properties led to the development of nanotechnologies that seem very much like magic including the manipulation of matter, energy, and even resurrection from death.

The first five hundred years of Omni-Tek's unfettered control of Rubi-Ka were marked with an exemplary worker treatment record, but as time passed the company's policies degraded into near totalitarianism. It was then that a significant number of poorly treated colonists rebelled and began to secretly trade stolen notum to a rival corporation in exchange for weapons. These rebel groups, collectively calling themselves the Clans, fought a series of wars with Omni-Tek in the centuries leading up to the start of the game's official time line. These opposing sides make up the two playable factions within the game.
