The Phoenix Tower is worth any irritation you may suffer. There are thirty floors to trudge up. Every five floors you will find two pots. One contains treasure and the other houses a silly little monster by the name of Magic Pot. This greedy bugger wants Elixirs—lots of Elixirs. You usually can’t sate him with just one. But once he has gotten his fill he escapes and leaves your party 100 abp. That amount of abp is nothing to scoff at. The moral of the story is, if you don’t have at least 10-15 Elixirs, turn back and either save up a small fortune to purchase them at Phantom Village, steal them, or fight monsters that drop them (the irritating Landcrawler in the desert does just that).

Another of the Phoenix Tower’s charms is its penchant for hidden doorways. From the start of the tower the way up is unclear. A stone slab sits in the center of the room and there is no visible exit. Get used to these, they will plague you all the way to the top. You reveal the exit by examining either the left or the right side of the slab. No matter which side you examine you will be able to continue up the tower. It’s just that one side will have a monster lurking in its corridors and the other will allow safe passage.

Floor six is just another staircase. Follow it up to the 7th floor and examine the left hand side. At the 8th floor examine the left hand side. At the 9th floor examine the right hand side. Breathe for a moment at the tenth floor. Look in the left pot for more cash! This time you stuff your pockets with 10,000 Gil. The right pot hides a Magic Pot, so switch your jobs around as you see fit and then start pitching Elixirs at him. Snicker at the Phoenix Down. he drops while dancing at the joy of another 100 abp.
